理查·斯特勞斯以強烈的企圖心，在“查拉圖斯特拉如是說”中實現了哲學音樂化的理想，曲中運用多調式的效果，將段落詩的韻味與情緒，描寫得相當傳神。而“莎樂美”的七紗舞，充滿東洋的神秘情調，是首深具管弦樂效果、變化無窮的作品。歌劇“玫瑰騎士”第二幕終場所奏的圓舞曲，經常單獨在音樂會中演奏，并被改編成各種樂器的獨奏曲。
